This version has been made lightly sepia. Eleanor is an imposing female African elephant who was the subject of a book by Daphne Sheldrick (An Elephant Called Eleanor), published in 1981. At the time when this photograph was taken Eleanor would have been 28 years old. She was orphaned in Samburu National Park (northern Kenya) in 1962 and became part of Daphne Sheldrick's famous elephant orphan programme, run from Tsavo East. At that time, Eleanor was accompanied by an armed game guard who would lean nonchalantly against Eleanor's back legs. African elephants are distinct from the Asian varieties. There are two African species – the plains elephant (Loxodonta africana), of which Eleanor is an example; and the forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis). Close up portrait of Eleanor: .
