Large spreading tree to 30m. Bark smooth and greyish. Shoots with long elliptical reddish-brown buds. Leaves elliptical, pointed, shallowly toothed, with parallel veins running to the leaf margin. silky at least when young. Flowers appearing in Spring (April-May) with the young leaves, male in drooping tassels, female separate and erect. Fruit 1-3 triangular nuts in a bristly, woody splitting husk. Habitat: Woods, often on calcareous but also on sandy soils. Distribution: Europe north to SE Norway.
