Cartes marbrees (playing cards with a marbled pattern on the back) were manufactured in the Belgian city of Turnhout. This pack, contained within a yellow wrapper, was possibly made by the company Brepols & Dierckx Zoon (1849–1911) in the 19th century, around 1885. The wrappper includes text in Flemish, 'Fijne Gemarmerde Speelkaarten' – 'Fine Marbled Cards'. Marbling is a process whereby colour is floated on a liquid base (size) and then transferred to paper or card, creating a pattern similar to that on marbled stone. This image shows the four lower value cards in clubs, from ten down to seven. A complete pack of these marbled playing cards comprises 32 cards, each with square corners. They consist of Ace, King (Roi), Queen (Dame), Jack (Valet), ten, nine, eight and seven in each of the four suits. The card designs are a variation on an original from the 17th century known as French 'Paris', employing the French card symbols of clubs, diamonds, hearts and spades.
