Zadar is the economic and cultural center of northern Dalmatia and is the fifth largest city in Croatia. The city is rich with many interesting monuments, including historic octagonal wells built in 1574. The square where the wells are located is called Five Wells Square from the number of wells located there, which, combined with a former tanker, were to provide drinking water to residents in case of Turkish attacks.
