St Botolph’s Priory in Colchester, Essex, Eastern England, was founded around 1093 and housed Augustinian canons until its dissolution in 1536. It was constructed using flint and reused Roman bricks which were locally readily available thanks to the town’s earlier occupation as a Roman settlement. The Priory was built in typical Norman style with thick circular pillars, round arches and a highly decorative West Front, of which this image shows part. The Priory was badly damaged in 1648 during the siege of Colchester in the Civil War. Built Structure | Ruined | History | Brick | Architecture
