Dazzling displays of colourful and fast moving northern lights were observed. Green, red and rarer dark red, purple and blue colours were seen. The disturbance to earth's magnetic field was caused by solar material from coronal mass ejections (CME) — large expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the sun's atmosphere.
