High Resolution JPEG Picture of The Commissary Storage Building at Fort Smith (Ark.) is the oldest original building on site. When construction on the second Fort Smith began in 1838, it was intended for defense, and the plans called for a 12-foot-high pentagonal wall with fortified gun platforms at the five angles. In 1845 Quartermaster General Thomas Jesup ordered the post's mission changed from defense to supply, and the unfinished northwest bastion was converted to commissary storage.
