Inscription on the obelisk erected in Macquarie Place, Sydney in 1818 by Governor Lachlan Macquarie. This side of the obelisk records distances to major towns or locations. The obelisk is one of the most important monuments in the history of New South Wales because all distances to other towns and cities are measured from this point, until today. Instead of continuing to write "Miles", the engraver has used the symbols for "ditto", which means "the same thing". Surrounding trees cast shadows over the inscription.
