This half crown was minted in Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee year, 1887, celebrating her 50 years on the throne. This photo shows the reverse / back of the coin, bearing the bearing the British shield surmounted by Victoria's crown, the whole being surrounded with celebratory roses and ribbons. In the centre of the date, 1887, is a small figure of St. George and the dragon. Silver coins of this time were made of stering silver, with a purity of 0.925. The half crown represented one-eighth of a pound, 30 pennies, which is 12.5p in today's decimalised currency. However, because of its silver content, the coin is now worth a number of times its face value. The reverse / back of this coin bears the words BRITANNIARUM REGINA FID DEF, Queen of Britain, Defender of the Faith.
