"THIS CASTLE IS AN UNINHABITED RUIN. The 1st Earl of Douglas inherited Hermitage in the late 13th to early 14th Century and he built the original stone structure from a previous wooden fortress which was erected by Sir Nicholas de Soules. Four great stone towers were added at the end of the 14th Century, giving the appearance of a huge stone wall with a great central arch.
