Hot air balloons are lighter-than-air aircraft consisting of a bag, or envelope, containing heated air. Suspended beneath is a gondola or wicker basket, which carries passengers and a heat source, normally an open flame created by burning liquid propane. The heated air inside the envelope creates buoyancy, with a lower density than the colder air outside the envelope. Hot air balloons cannot fly beyond the atmosphere. The envelope is not sealed at the bottom, as the air inside the envelope is at equal pressure to the surrounding air.
