The hippopotamus, often referred to as the Greek word for "hippopotamus," is the second largest land animal after the elephant and belongs to the Hippodromidae family, the same family as elephants and rhinos. Hippos are often seen sleeping, basking on the shore, swimming or swimming in rivers, lakes and other waters.
