There are several of the 14 gopurams visible but the main ones are located at the North, South, East and West entrances. Gods, Goddesses and stories from Hindu scriptures and mythology adorn the Gopuram. Madurai is located in the heart of the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The Temple is mentioned in Tamil Literature as early as the 7th Century AD. The current structure was built between 1623 and 1655 during the reign of the King Thirumalai Nayak.
