Oast oast house hop
High Resolution JPEG Picture of An oast, oast house or hop kiln is a building designed for kilning (drying) hops as part of the brewing process for making beer. They can be found in most hop-growing (and former hop-growing) areas and are often good examples of vernacular architecture. The cowl is a device on the top of the kiln to keep the weather out and to induce a flow of air through the kiln. Many redundant oasts have been converted into houses. Oast means kiln in Old English. Taken from the Three Chimneys pub in Biddenden, near Sissingurst Castle Garden, Kent. May 22, 2023.
