In old currency there were 240 of these one penny coins, measuring 30 mm in diameter, to a pound. In the new decimal currency there were 100 new pennies to the pound. For 300 years Britannia, as shown here in low-relief has proudly adorned many coins of the realm. As of 2008, she will no longer feature on any coins. Britannia first appeared on the Penny Coin in 1797. She was seen as the patron goddess of the early British Celtic tribes. In recent times she has been the personification of Great Britain."
