Vibrant orange papery-thin petal Iceland Poppies (Papaver nudicaule) growing in early summer in an English garden. Native to subpolar regions of northern Europe and North America - but not Iceland - the lightly fragrant flowers are supported by hairy, 12 inch, (300mm) curved stems amongst feathery blue-green foliage. They were first described by botanists as far back as 1759. They are sometimes called Arctic Poppy or Yellow Arctic Poppy.The hardy perennial plant, sometimes grown as biennials, contains alkaloids that can poison animals if ingested.
