The Cantareira System is the largest of the systems managed by Sabesp, destined to capture and treat water for Greater São Paulo and one of the largest in the world, being used to supply 8.8 million Sabesp customers. The system consists of six dams interconnected by a complex system of tunnels, canals, and a high-tech pumping station to overcome the physical barrier of the Serra da Cantareira. The system also draws attention to the distance of its structure from the urban nucleus to which it serves and also by the extension of its drainage area, which extends as far south as the state of Minas Gerais. During the water crisis in the state of São Paulo in 2014-2016 the singing system was one of the most affected. Sabesp's management was blamed for the crisis.
