High altitude hajar mountains
High Resolution JPEG Picture of In the high altitude Hajar Mountains of the Sultanate of Oman near the city of Nizwa sits the canyon of Al Jabal Al Akhdar, the 2nd deepest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. From an altitude of 7500 feet rising above the walls of the canyon can be found three ancient, largely evacuated villages, each well over 1000 years old. Whilst the residents of these villages have largely left, their former dwellings have been allowed to stay and be take back by nature. This study is a series of 8 atmospheric images of these timeless villages, reminiscent of biblical times, small clusters of settlements on the sheer canyon walls set in magnificently dramatic scenery. They were all shot in the third week of November 2019 on the occasion of the 49th Glorious National Day in Oman. This sixth image is an atmospheric close-up townscape of the 1st village - Al Ar at dusk from directly above on the canyon rim.
