The devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes in Gozo began on March 25, 1879, when a statue of the Virgin Mary was placed beneath Tal-Qortin promontory overlooking Mġarr Harbour. Blessed by Bishop Pietro Pace on June 3, 1883, the statue led to efforts to build a chapel. The foundation stone for the Gothic-style chapel, designed by Emmanuel Galizia and built by master mason Wiġi Vella, was laid on June 10, 1888. The chapel was blessed on August 27, 1893. The feast of Our Lady of Lourdes is celebrated annually on February 11, marking the anniversary of the Virgin's first apparition to Bernadette Soubirous.
