The Palais de Justice (or Palace of Justice), formerly the Palais de la Cité (Palace of the City) and Sainte Chapelle (on the left) in Paris is one of the oldest surviving buildings of the former royal palace where exists the Conciergerie, which used to be a prison where Marie Antoinette was imprisoned during French Revolution when she was to be executed on the guillotine. Since medieval times this site has been associated with the judicial functioning of state. From the sixteenth century to the French Revolution this was the seat of the Parlement de Paris.
