Merkinch Local Nature Reserve was designated in 2007. Being the only Local Nature Reserve in the Scottish Highlands. It is the 50th Nature Reserve in Scotland. It covers a 55 hectare area of land and shore between the River Ness and the Caledonian Canal, where it enters the Beauly Firth. Here we see the pathway that leads from to the Caledonian Canal to the Reserve. Several unrecognisable, incidental people are walking the route.
