WW1 German Stick Grenade Model 1916. The first German Stick Grenade was the Model 1915, the Model 1916 was very similar, but with some improvements, particularly the introduction of the screw cap base. These grenades were use in large quantities by the German Army during the Great War. They were not as powerful as the British Mills Bomb, but the stick enabled German soldiers to throw them further. They had a belt clip, or could be carried in bags, German stormtroopers often carried several in two sandbags tied around their necks for easy access. To use the screw cap on the base was removed and a porcelain ring on a string would drop out, this would be pulled which activated the fuse in the detonator which would explode approximately 4.5 seconds later.
